Actually, layering will make your hair look even thicker, and can make it a lot harder to manage. Trust me, I know this from personal experience.
However, all is not over just yet. Hairstylists are experienced with thick hair, and can actually thin it out for you. You can also get an easier length cut while you're at it-medium length is quite good. So ask your hairstylist.
My hair is very thick. Will layering my hair make it look thinner?
No it will actually look thicker. I'd talk to your stylist and keep a one length cut with razored ends. be glad you've got thick hair- you won't lose it as you get older.

Alissa K is right. I too have the terrible thick hair. And I get mine razored. It feels great and it makes my hair feel lighter!

I have very very thick hair also, I have long layers and it it does look a little thinner... make sure whoever you have layering knows what they are doing and i would do long layers.

YES YES YES YES YES!
I have insanely thick, curly hair and I just got short layers in my hair and OMG does it feel 100% thinner!
It is still thick, of corse. But in a way that you can deal with and really, at least I think, is much better then a bush of hair, straight or curly.

You can just ask your salon person to thin it out. she will either razor it or use weird scissors. it helps. but layering wont make it look thinner

Yes, it will. Though it matters on the "technique/" way the stylist layers your hair. For example, if they make short layers, it will definitely look thick. Though if they make long AND short layers, it will look thinner. Here are some pictures that show you the layers I'm talking about.

I also have thick hair and many stylists recommend layering it. However the layers of wavy hair spring up get dry and break and look like a fuzzy mess. In high humidity even like cotton candy.
My hair is healthier when it has one length without layers. And the wave is less as straightened out by the weight of long hair.

My wife has very thick hair. When we first got together I told her to get her hair layered, maybe it will make it thinner. She almost broke up with me over it. She hated it. It didn't look any thinner. Every hair-stylist she sees says she ought to be lucky to have thick hair like she does, everybody else is paying to make thier hair look thicker. You woman worry too much about your hair. I shave my head and get it over with. HaHa

your hair will definetely feel thinner, trust me i have super thick hair as well, but it looks heavier. Their is a hairstyling technique used which actually thins your hair... don't worry, it doesn't burn it and no chemicals are used.. it is just a metal tool the size of a small comb.. see, harmless? haha... but just so you know, when I thinned MY hair, I quickly began to miss m nice long and thick hair. Just think before you do, Ok!?!
best of luck!! xx. Lauren

What you need is "texturizing" also commonly called "thinning out". There are many different ways to texturize hair and it will depend on a number of factors such as how thick your hair is; the texture of your hair (ie. if your strands are fine or course) and how much wave you have in your hair (this can range from poker straight to extremely curly).
A good hairtsylist takes all of these factors into account to lessen the thickness of your hair. He/she can use notching sheers to go in and take out bulk, or slide cut, or razor cut.
This is NOT the same as layering. You can still have long layers with thick hair. It just needs the proper texturizing for your hair type.
If done by a professional, yes you can have thinner looking hair with layers.
