Well, if your hair has at least a little bit of wave you should be able to do this no problem, I also have thick hair and have been trying different things on it for years. First of all, the product you use makes a big difference, Curls Rock by TIGI is a really good one. When your hair is still damp scrunch it as evenly into your hair (starting at the bottom) as you can, then defuse it. If you don't have a defuser they are pretty cheap - just a little attachment that goes on your hair dryer and changes the airflow to help lock curls in place.

A diffuser. Its an attachment for a blow drier. Put some gel in you're hair and then scrunch you're hair using the diffuser. If you buy one it will come with directions. You can get one at a drug store.

I have really thick wavy hair and i use Pantene Scrunching Mousse, it works good and smells so yummy. hope it works for you too!!!

Getting a cut with long layers will help lighten up the weight, then use a diffuser and gel or mousse for scrunching.
