id say it is b/c everything in general costed alot less then, this is now and US currency has gone up alot and things are costing alot more now.

In 1950 wages were extremely low compared to now. Minimum wages ranged from .50--.75 cents per hour. I believe the $9.00 haircut today is a rare bargain. Pay your barber/stylist at least $16.00.
